Well I'm Kim sound chick, I have been in the audio industry for ten years.

I have never been afraid to get my hands dirty, loading gear or pulling up multicores in the mud! in fact I quite enjoy it.

I pride myself in my quest for knowledge and make a conscious effort every year to expand my capabilities by attending training seminars to become familiar with new equipment and technologies, making life much easier in the field.

Most recently I have attended Rational Acoustics Smaart Seminar to aid in systems design and alignment. Please check out my CV for more details.

How did I get in to the Music Industry?

I always wanted to be in the music industry from being at school. I have been in and around bands for as long as I can remember. Before becoming a sound engineer I used to play Bass and Guitar. (I even hold Grade 5 music theory) At college I studied A-level music technology, maths, physics and then an HND in Music Production.

I got my first break when a friend at college needed a sound engineer for a theater production he was organizing for the millennium celebrations. This was my very first show as sound engineer. I was even running sound effects and backing tracks from TAPE!!!

After that the bug had bitten me and I got in contact with a local PA company and started working as Loader and general dogs body. During my time at Newcastle college doing my HND I constantly worked shows on evenings. Learning my trade as well as the theory.

Technically my HND hasn't helped me get anywhere in the industry but it did give me a training ground for the skills I was learning on shows. I'd take them back to the college studio and put them into practice. The deeper I get in to audio I'm realizing how much more relevant my Physics Alevel is to wave theory!

I continued for many years working as a loader learning the job until one day I got the call. "One of the guys has called in sick, you've got the gig!" from then on I was mixing shows and doing monitors on festivals for the company. I then became a freelance engineer working for may companies and venues.

What equipment do you have/ use?

I can use whatever equipment that are in the venues. I don't demand A or B console or sound system. Its always nice to have the gear you know but this isn't possible at all levels. I have extensive experience on a large number of sound desks both analogue and digital. Also experience on a wide variety of sound systems.

I own a decent collection of microphones and can provide them as part of my engineering package when on tour. I also have a 20ch mobile recording system for live recording.

What type of music are you into?

I am into a VERY wide variety of music, from metal to pop to dance, even a bit of good old rock and roll. I find having this eclectic taste in music allows me to mix different genres more effectively. The mix varies dramatically from style to style. Understanding these differences is imperative.

What interests do you have outside your job?

I like to keep myself busy. I'm always reading something. I enjoy snowboarding, and photography. I like going to the movies and of course listening to music. I design & maintain this website myself and would like to expand my webdesign knowledge over the next few years.
